2019-20 Quarter 1:
Mohammed Haq As a freshman and sophomore, Mohammed was a frequent visitor to the Mastery Lab. He appreciated
the support he received from both teachers and student tutors, and as a junior, decided to pay it
forward and become a tutor himself. When we created this tutoring center, Mohammed is exactly
the type of tutor we envisioned. He is a natural teacher. He is friendly and welcoming, and it is an
absolute joy to watch him work with a student in need of support. His patient encouragement puts
his clients at ease and helps them discover their strengths. Mo never hesitates when called upon to help
a peer or man the greeter desk, even if it is not his scheduled tutoring day. Mo even came in over the
summer along with fellow master tutors to help plan and then execute training for this year’s new crew
of tutors. Thanks to his efforts, the Mastery Lab continues to be an invaluable resource in providing
academic support to our students. Mohammed is a genuinely kind and caring young man with a bright
future ahead of him. For all these reasons and more, it is my sincere pleasure to present him the Student
of the Quarter Award.
2019-20 Quarter 2:
Katie Talens
It is an absolute pleasure to present Katie with the Student of the Quarter Award for her work as a tutor in the Mastery Lab.
Katie is a very talented all-around gymnast competing in every event, and she is also an all-around tutor capable of assisting students
in every subject! Katie joined our tutor squad last year, and we are ever so grateful that she did. She was our sole tutor during 7th
hour. Needless to say, we kept Katie quite busy, but she never complained or hesitated when called upon to assist a peer. Her
friendly demeanor and patient support are appreciated by the students she tutors. Katie is just the type of tutor we envisioned
when we created the Mastery Lab. Not only is she intelligent and kind, she is also a great ambassador for this resource. Katie,
along with fellow "master tutors" volunteered to come in over the summer to help plan and then lead tutor training for this year's crew.
Thanks to her dedication, the Mastery Lab continues to provide outstanding academic support. Next year, Katie is off to play socceer
at Carthage College. They are lucky to have her, as are we! Thank you again and congratulations.
2018-19 Quarter 1:
Karley Nawrocki
It is my great pleasure to present the Student of the Quarter Award to Karley Nawrocki for her work as a tutor here in the Mastery Lab. The Mastery Lab was created four years ago with the mission of providing a safe and welcoming environment that students can access when they are in need of some academic support.. Although we have staff members available throughout the day, it is our tutors who form the backbone of this resource, and it would absolutely not function without them. Over the past few years, I have had the pleasure of knowing some students who are just naturals when it comes to tutoring. Karley is one of those students. She is a phenomenal tutor. She possesses patience and empathy and has a knack for helping a peer find his own voice when it comes to writing. She easily establishes rapport with her "clients" and makes them feel at ease. These qualities are not only apparent to me - one of our English teachers was quite impressed by Karley’s guidance as she helped a student plan out and compose an essay. Karley followed up with that student and made sure the finished product was something he could be proud of. Yet, the quality I appreciate most about Karley is her commitment to our mission. Despite a demanding course load that includes 5 AP classes, Karley continues to generously give of her time to make this place even better. Last spring I put out a call to our veteran tutors to assist me in planning tutor training for this year, and guess who was the first to take me up on it. Karley gave up one of her last days of summer vacation to come in and help plan for tutor training. Not only that, she was one of our "master tutors" who helped run the training. Due to her efforts, tutor training was quite a success, and I am happy to say this year’s tutor corps is one of the most capable and prepared groups we have had. Thank you Karley for all you have done and continue to do to help your peers here at EGHS.
2018-19 Quarter 2:
Brayden Bobowski
Students at EGHS are encouraged to be responsible, respectful and connected. Those adjectives aptly describe Brayden Bobowski. Brayden participates in debate, choir, Shakespeare club and the musical. He manages to do all this despite carrying a demanding course load and maintaining almost perfect grades. Yet he still has time to give up his lunch period twice a week to tutor here in the Mastery Lab. I am so pleased that Brayden has joined our crew this year, and it is my great pleasure to award him with student of the quarter for his work as a tutor here. I truly appreciate his energy and enthusiasm for tutoring his peers. HIs friendly demeanor puts his clients at ease and they appreciate his patient support. Brayden is also an awesome ambassador for the Mastery Lab and was instrumental in producing a promotional video encouraging students to utilize this valuable resource. Brayden is only a sophomore, yet is mature beyond his years, and I hope he will continue to tutor for the remainder of his high school career. Congratulations Brayden and thank you for your dedication to our mission.

2018-19 Quarter 3:
Anna Olvera
It is my great pleasure to present Anna Olvera with the Student of the Quarter Award for her work as a tutor in the Mastery Lab. This semester Anna has been what we affectionately refer to as a "RAT" or Rent-A-Tutor in Sra. Cote's Spanish 2 class. Anna has proven to be an invaluable assistant in the classroom. She not only possesses the language skills necessary to be a great aide, but also takes the initiative to help achieve the learning targets for the day. Aside from her work in the classroom, Anna has also cheerfully agreed to translate tests into Spanish for Mrs. Perkins LEP US history students. But the thing I appreciate most about Anna is that she is such an excellent ambassador for our tutoring center. She is intuitive and patient and just a genuinely nice young lady. Her smile lights up a room, and her friendly demeanor was put to the test this past fall when Student Council hosted its first Halloween Fest. The ML signed up to sponsor 2 classrooms, and Anna generously volunteered her time to supervise games for the little ones including a pumpkin bowling game that required her setting up the paper towel pins and sometimes dodging a flying pumpkin heading her way! Thank you Anna for all you do to make the Mastery Lab such a valuable resource.
2018-19 Quarter 4:
Jessica MurilloIt is my sincere pleasure to present Jessica Murillo with the Student of the Quarter award for her work as Mastery Lab tutor. I start my day with Jess who always greets me with a smile and an eagerness to help others. She is one of only two tutors available during first hour and is consistently ready, willing and able to help any student that walks through our doors. She is dedicated and conscientious, warm and friendly, but also very knowledgeable and detail-oriented. She is a natural tutor with a genuine desire to help others. Jess has made a number of connections with our “clients” and many of them have come back on their own to seek her assistance. I am grateful Jess was able to find time in her busy AP loaded schedule to be available to tutor this semester. She embodies all the key qualities we seek in our tutors and her patient support will be sorely missed next year as she embarks on her collegiate career. I see a bright future ahead for this young lady! Thank you and congratulations Jessica!
